A New Adventure

Today I started a new adventure - a new job with permanent remote/work from home status! I'm beyond excited for the journey ahead as I was at a point where I was ready to give up on a career in higher ed. My new job is with a higher ed-tech company that develops, designs, and delivers online education programs for colleges and universities in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia, and Malaysia!! WHAT?!

I'm still semi-baffled that a month ago I was finetuning my resume and cover letters to show that my skills in higher education and news were transferrable to agencies; now I feel like I have the world at my feet with this new job! It was only one of two higher ed-related jobs that I applied for in a flurry of LinkedIn applications at the beginning of September, and I broke my own rule in applying as it didn't have a salary posted with it, but there was something that drew me to it. I also did some research on pay at the company, and I'm so glad I did that - they even offered me MORE than I asked (which was already above what I'd been asking in other job interviews!).

There's a lot going on as I start this journey - we're currently dealing with no water in our townhouse rental because our landlord is not the brightest star in the sky and didn't exactly explain to the plumbers the severity of the water leak we're experiencing. It started last week and we immediately notified him as we weren't sure which unit it was coming from, but there was a LOT of water running down the driveway between the two townhouse buildings. A day later we received an email from the city that we had an unusual amount of water usage to the tune of 4,000 gallons consumed - yeah. No shit Sherlock! Anyway, at this point, we're filing a claim with our renter's insurance to try to stay in a hotel until our landlord decides this is worth fixing (massive eye roll).

I've also started researching new grad programs. I've utilized the tuition assistance at my last employer, which was limited to that university, but my experience with that institution and specifically that grad program...I need to step away. At the end of this semester, I'll have accumulated 12 credit hours towards my master's but until this semester I haven't learned a thing, and I have been less than impressed with the organization of the program, the leadership, and the ability for them to care and relate to the students in their program. Fortunately, I have tuition assistance with my new job, but it won't start until I've been there for six months. Despite the fact that I'm nearly halfway through this degree, I don't want my money or the money used from my new job to go towards this program. My current professor has been really wonderful in having these conversations with me as I've been chatting with her about the current water situation and the song and dance we're playing trying to not intrude on family and friends but also needing to shower and have running water for, ya know, living.

That's all for now! Looking forward to updating y'all more on this new adventure soon!
