Calm Coffee Check-In: Being

Writer: noralynnbclarknoralynnbclark

Happy Tuesday, y'all!

I will admit that switching up my meditations to the morning is a little out of my comfort zone, but that's also why I think starting the practice is good. Today's meditation is a perfect example, as having already walked my dong and consumed my half-caff coffee with oat milk and Think Creamer, along with my breakfast, my brain is rearing to go. It took me about halfway through the meditation to stop fidgeting, looking around, and thinking about what I need to add to my planner, and if I finish this Calm Coffee Check-In by 9:15, I'll have plenty of time to get my workout in before my 10:30 meeting, but if I don't finish until closer to 9:30, I'll be pushing getting a working in, and if I don't finish it until after 9:30 I'll have to do my workout after my meeting...

A cup of creamy brown coffee sits behind a blue plate filled with scrambled eggs, a spicy sausage patty, and a slice of cream cheese danish with a ramekin of glaze to dunk the danish.

So having the first morning starting my meditations as part of the Calm Coffee Check-In, the focus of 'being' is quite perfect! Connecting with my breath instead of my brain, focusing on breathing in and out, and letting the words 'breathing in' and 'breathing out' help occupy my brain from the LA highway of thought traffic that can build up and zoom around at unnecessary speeds. I'd love to see data from my Apple Watch on my heart rate when I meditate compared to when I don't in the morning. I'm pretty sure it would show that it helps me become more placid.

What I also love about this meditation, in particular, is the distinction that Tamara makes between 'being' and 'doing,' which is also a practice of stoicism that Chris and I have chatted about. It can be so easy to get swept up in the 'doing' of the day-to-day, which is why I love starting my day with a meditation, as it reminds me to 'be' for a moment. Start my day 'being' before I begin 'doing'; that way, I can focus on what keeps me at peace and happy as I move forward in the day.

I like the quote she included by Iain Thomas, as it speaks to the purposeful act of 'being.' "And each day, it's up to you to yank your hand back, put it on your heart, and say, 'No. This is what's important.'"

Screenshot that reads, "And each day, it's up to you to yank your hand back, put it on your heart and say, 'No. This is what's important.'"

So how will you 'be' today? And how will that influence what you 'do'? If this is different than any other day, I'd love to know if you felt a difference in emotions, feelings, perspective, or understanding at the end of the day. I know I'll be relistening to this meditation tonight and probably the one from last night on 'transformation' as that also spoke to me!

Whether my workout happens before my meeting or after, I know I'll enjoy it more now with a focus on being more present during that workout rather than treating it like another thing to check off my daily planner and to-do list!
