Daily Hot Cocoa Check-In: Connection and Balance

Writer: noralynnbclarknoralynnbclark

The "best-laid plans" is how I believe the phrase goes 😅 I can say that I really did try to get this going yesterday morning, last night, AND this morning, but sometimes when you're out in the middle of the high desert in the middle of nowhere, technology isn't always the most reliable.

However, when the universe gives you a sign, it's not a bad idea to listen, and that's precisely what I did. I spent the majority of yesterday helping my husband and father-in-law. Part of the reason we're in Oregon is to connect with friends and family, so a day of forced disconnection from technology isn't bad.

However, human connection is only sometimes reliable, too, and can require forced connection depending on the circumstances. Any time events, trips, or even just conversations occur with and/or around family, there can be tension. Sometimes family relationships can't be repaired no matter how hard we try, but sometimes the tiniest connection can create a positive snowball. Of course, it's all about balance. Yeah, ya know - "too much of a good thing" is definitely legit and can be balanced out with the reminder that "absence makes the heart grow fonder" 😜

As many friends know, I am very family-oriented, but that's not because my family is perfect. Awesome, yes, for sure! However, a family is made up of people, and as we all know, people - humans - aren't perfect. It seems like that can be magnified with families, and after nearly 36 years on this Earth, one of the things that I've learned is that when it comes to family, we have to remember we are all just human; and as I mentioned before, humans aren't perfect.

In high school and college, I learned some things about how some family members treated my parents, and it was tough to come to terms with the relationships I had with these individuals up to that point. It was a 180-degree change that took me many years to dissect, analyze, and understand - in many ways, I'm still working on this as I learn more. But when a family member dies, there is a limited amount of perspective that can be sourced for that process and growth.

Of course, some family members take advantage of others, including their own family and the "family we adopt" through life experiences. Sometimes we give those individuals more leniency than they deserve, and sometimes we don't give them enough. Again, balance. And balance can be found through connection if not just the attempt to connect. It can also be found in knowing we've done all we can and we can only control what we can control.

I've mentioned that we utilize a coffee creamer with adaptogens, but recently we found a yummy hot cocoa with adaptogens from Laird SuperFood. And when I say yummy, it's one of my favorite hot cocoa's - healthy or indulgent! We actually made sure we restocked our supply before heading out to Oregon because we knew the evening temperatures would be suitable for hot cocoa, and I am so glad we did! I forgot to pack our handheld milk frother, which helps make the cocoa super smooth and creamy. Of course, we made our cocoa a little less "healthy" by adding a scoop of whip cream, which if you haven't tried before, I can't wait to hear from you after your first cocoa with whip cream! PSA - whip cream is also REALLY good in your morning coffee. You're welcome 😎
